Saudi Pro League (SPL)
The Saudi Pro League (SPL), formerly known as the Saudi Professional League, stands as the highest-tier football competition in Saudi Arabia, rapidly evolving into a global football powerhouse under the government’s Vision 2030 initiative. Launched in 1976, the league underwent significant reforms in 2023, transforming into a modern, investor-driven competition with a mission to rival Europe’s top leagues by attracting elite talent and hosting major international events

Structure & Format

  • Teams: Expanded to 18 clubs in the 2024–25 season, including traditional powerhouses like Al-Hilal (19-time champions), Al-Ittihad, Al-Nassr (home to Cristiano Ronaldo), and Al-Ahli (featuring Roberto Firmino and Riyad Mahrez).
  • Format: A 34-round double-league system, with the top 3 teams and the Saudi Crown Prince Cup winner qualifying for the AFC Champions League. The bottom 3 teams face relegation .
  • Foreign Players: Clubs can register 10 foreign players, with 8 eligible to play per match. Notably, two of these must be born in 2003 or later, reflecting a focus on youth development

    Historical Evolution

    • Early Years (1976–2022): Initially a regional league, it gained professionalism in 1990 and rebranded as the SPL in 2022. Al-Hilal dominated, winning 19 titles, while Al-Ittihad and Al-Nassr each claimed 9.
    • 2023 Revolution: The Public Investment Fund (PIF) acquired 75% stakes in Al-Hilal, Al-Ittihad, Al-Nassr, and Al-Ahli, injecting over €30 billion to attract global stars like Ronaldo, Karim Benzema, and Neymar. This "Football Revolution" aimed to elevate the league’s global profile and prepare for Saudi Arabia’s bid to host the 2034 FIFA World Cup
